Budget Travel Southeast Asia: What $50/day Actually Gets You

Southeast Asia is still the best-value long-haul destination, but "dirt cheap" is a 2010s myth. Here's what $30, $50, and $100 per day really buy in 2025 across Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, and Cambodia — with honest breakdowns.

Three budget tiers, clearly drawn

Per-person per-day, excluding international flights:

  • $30/day: hostel dorms, street food only, local buses, one paid activity per week
  • $50/day: private rooms in guesthouses, mix of street food and sit-down meals, occasional taxi, a few activities
  • $100/day: 3-star hotels, nice dinners out, Grab/Gojek everywhere, tours and activities freely

Thailand: middle of the pack now

Bangkok and Chiang Mai are still affordable; islands (Phuket, Krabi, Koh Samui) are European-priced in high season. $50/day is realistic on the mainland; plan $80–100/day for island time.

Vietnam: the current cheap champion

Vietnam is the best value in the region right now. $40/day gets you private guesthouses, pho breakfasts, bus tickets to the next city, and beer at 25,000 VND ($1). Avoid the over-touristy Old Quarter Hanoi for accommodation; stay in Ba Dinh or Tay Ho instead.

Indonesia (Bali): two-tier pricing

Ubud inland and eastern Bali are still $40/day. Canggu and Seminyak have creeped to $80–120/day thanks to the digital nomad boom. Local warungs (food stalls) remain $2–4 per meal everywhere.

Cambodia: gateway deal

Siem Reap (Angkor Wat) runs $35–50/day. The Angkor 3-day pass is $62 — worth every dollar. Phnom Penh is similar; coastal Kep/Kampot is cheaper.

Things that blow budgets

Top surprise expenses:

  • International flights between SEA countries ($80–200 each)
  • Diving certifications and multi-dive packages ($300+ for open water)
  • Tours through hotel concierges (2–4x markup over booking direct)
  • ATM fees ($3–5 per withdrawal; use Wise or bring USD to exchange)
  • "Western" restaurants — often 3x local prices for mediocre food

Sample 3-week SEA route on $50/day

A classic backpacker loop:

  • Bangkok (3 nights) → Chiang Mai (4 nights, overnight bus or budget flight)
  • Flight to Hanoi → Ha Long Bay cruise (2 nights) → Hoi An (3 nights)
  • Flight to Siem Reap (3 nights, Angkor Wat) → Bangkok or direct flight home
  • Total ~3 weeks, ~$1,050 land budget + $300 internal flights + $900 international
