Plan a trip to Tokyo

A sprawling city best explored neighborhood by neighborhood.

Tokyo isn't a single city — it's a dozen distinct neighborhoods connected by the world's best metro system. Trying to see it all in 3 days leads to transit fatigue. Pick 3–4 districts and go deep rather than doing a landmark-tick tour.

Best time to visit

Late March–early April for cherry blossoms (but crowded and pricey). October–November for autumn foliage and mild weather. Avoid the humid June rainy season and August heat.

How long to stay

5–7 days for Tokyo alone. 10–14 days if combining with Kyoto, Osaka, and Hakone.

Top things to do in Tokyo

01

Shibuya Crossing & Scramble

The famous intersection is best viewed from the Shibuya Sky deck or the Starbucks overlooking it.

02

Senso-ji Temple, Asakusa

Tokyo's oldest temple. Arrive early (7–8am) to beat tour buses; wander Nakamise shopping street.

03

TeamLab Planets / Borderless

Immersive digital art — book timed tickets weeks in advance, they sell out.

04

Tsukiji Outer Market

Inner wholesale market moved to Toyosu; outer market still has incredible breakfast stalls.

05

Meiji Shrine & Harajuku

Forested shrine grounds lead into Takeshita Street — maximum contrast walking the city can offer.

Where to stay

Shinjuku

Neon, skyscrapers, izakayas in Golden Gai. Good base — major JR hub.

Shibuya

Fashion, youth culture, nightlife. Lively and crowded.

Asakusa / Yanaka

Old Tokyo — temples, narrow lanes, calmer pace.

Quick tips

  • Get a Suica or Pasmo IC card at any station — taps for metro, trains, convenience stores.
  • Buy a JR Pass only if you're leaving Tokyo; it's not needed for Tokyo-only trips.
  • Restaurants often have plastic food displays and picture menus — just point.
